FlameReader takes the text you provide and turns it into spoken words. It can read text out loud, it can turn text into an MP3 file that you can put on a mobile music player, and, via the PowerReader function, it can read any piece of text you highlight. So if you would much rather listen to spoken words than read text, go get FlameReader.

A modern PC will easily meet this application’s system requirements: 1.2 GHz processor or better, 512MB of RAM memory or more, 100MB of free disk space, sound card, Microsoft Windows operating system. To get FlameReader up and running, you must download an executable, run it, then click through a setup wizard – so, a standard setup procedure that will go along smoothly and rapidly.

The main part of the application’s interface displays the text that will be read out loud. At the top there’s a ribbon with buttons for starting the reading process, converting the text to MP3/WAV, translating the text, and more. Click the flame icon in the top left corner and you’ll be able to change the interface’s color scheme.

There are several ways to get FlameReader to read text: you can type in any text you want, you can paste text into the application’s interface, you can load a TXT or RTF document, or you can use the PowerReader function (select the text you want, click the Play button on the PowerReader window). Of course, the application allows you to pick the voice that will be used, choose the reading speed, and adjust the pitch.

There are two other things you can do with FlameReader: you can convert text to MP3 or WAV; and you can translate text to another language.

There are several FlameReader editions to choose from: Standard, Premium, Special-Needs, and Flame. A concise presentation of the differences between these editions is available on the official FlameReader website.

Instead of reading text, you can lay back and listen – FlameReader will read it out loud to you.

Pros

The FlameReader system requirements are quite low; a modern PC will easily meet them. You can change the interface’s color scheme; the interface is very easy to use. Have FlameReader read text out loud, convert text to MP3 or WAV, translate text. There are several FlameReader editions to choose from.

Cons

30-day trial; nag screen.
